Data Operations Engineer

We are currently looking for talented and energetic engineers who would like to work on an exciting new set of products to help progressive organizations run more effective voter contact programs. This position will offer a unique opportunity to help build out an enterprise class data processing and analytics infrastructure for scale.

As an engineer at Catalist, you will have a leading role in efforts to discover actionable insights using the largest repository of individual-level data in progressive politics. Our work is on the cutting edge of data-driven politics, and your findings will help Democratic candidates and progressive organizations conduct successful advocacy and electoral campaigns.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Process voter, commercial, and specialty data files from different sources with ETL tools
  • Monitor and analyze data output to ensure the proper processing of voter data
  • Answer questions about the data using our database query tool and other internal resources
  • Create and maintain documentation to support all deliverables and to facilitate future replication
  • Present results, both orally and in writing, to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Assess data quality using internal and external Catalist tools, data, and products as an advanced user

Required skills and abilities:

  • Can do attitude, strong work ethic, and desire to learn new technology
  • Dynamic problem solving skills in order to assess the quality and determine the structural integrity of acquired data
  • Ability to articulate ideas clearly, to be creative, and to work in a personable manner
  • Detailed oriented and strong organization skills to work in a fast paced environment and handle various tasks at once
  • Working knowledge of SQL
  • Extensive knowledge of scripting languages such as Bash and Python
  • Working knowledge of Unix command line, specifically file processing and manipulation commands
  • Working knowledge of data manipulation in Excel (large data sets, formulas, graphs, and pivot tables)
  • Past political and technology experience is a plus
  • Experience with campaign data tools (like the Q Tool, M Tool, PDIQ, or VAN) a plus

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science, Engineering, Political Science or equivalent experience
  • Past political and technology experience is a plus
  • Experience with campaign and voter file data tools (e.g. VAN, PDI, Q, or M) a plus
  • Background check required
