Everytown for Gun Safety, the nation’s largest gun violence prevention advocacy group, is seeking a Research Director to lead the Research Department. The Research Department studies how gun violence occurs in America and identifies the best policies and interventions to prevent and address it. In this role, the Director will need to understand and communicate about the various types of gun violence, who it impacts, and how it impacts different communities and populations differently. You must be committed to addressing gun violence in diverse communities around the country.

We’ll trust you to lead and take on the following areas:

Research & Policy

  • Provide strategic vision and leadership to a team of research staff and consultants, thinking creatively about new avenues for academic and statistical research on gun violence prevention, policies, and interventions
  • Develop a focused research agenda to best support the organization’s legislative and non-legislative campaigns and priorities, working with executive leadership and other senior members of the policy team to provide research that helps set the policy agenda for the organization and supports existing policy priorities
  • Develop clear guidance and translate the implications of research findings so that practitioners and policymakers can implement new laws effectively and enforce existing policies
  • Lead team to determine validity and applications of social science research to decide whether policies and interventions work and what new policies and interventions may hold promise
  • Take findings and outcomes from other issues or public advocacy initiatives whose findings may be applicable to the gun safety movement and determine if and how they can be applied to prevent and reduce gun violence in America
  • Lead the development of innovative products for public and internal use on at least a monthly basis, including fact sheets, reports, presentations, and interactive tools
  • Clearly communicate research to diverse stakeholders and determine how to apply to campaigns, political action, grants, and other actions to further objective of ending gun violence in America
  • Serve as a key expert on research related to gun safety, including earned media appearances; public speaking at conferences and panels; and presentations to staff, donors, and volunteers

Strategic Planning & People Management

  • Serve as a key member of the organization’s senior team, participating in regular meetings and decision-making with leadership and other Directors
  • Lead the Research Department in developing an annual strategic plan and budget
  • Supervise a team of staff members and consultants
  • Work across the organization to equip staff, volunteers, and survivors with tools to be effective gun violence prevention advocates

External Affairs

  • Build and sustain relationships with diverse experts and organizations around the country
  • Work with and convene researchers to drive the gun violence conversation and influence policy
  • Represent Everytown in the media, on panels, at conferences, and in other public engagements

The ideal candidate will have:

  • An advanced degree in social science research, PhD preferred
  • 5+ years of leadership experience
  • A minimum of 10 years experience operating at the intersection of policy and advocacy
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate research findings to a broad range of audiences
  • A track record of building strong partnerships and working collaboratively with complex organizations
  • Working knowledge of firearm policy
  • Fluency with multiple research methods
  • The ability to work in a dynamic and fast paced environment with an open floor plan
  • Published research that is rigorous and responsive to practitioners’ needs
  • Grants management experience preferred, including grantee selection
  • Experience performing or overseeing database management and data visualization preferred
