Position Summary

Fellowship Overview

Data Science Fellows will start the summer with a nose dive into all-things Campaign Zero with a specialized focus on applied data science primarily through programming/scripting work to advance data analysis, data cleaning, database development, platform-based research analysis, etc. Fellows will gain content knowledge related to at least one or more ongoing campaigns.

Fellows will engage in a scope & sequence across three domains over the summer:

  1. Campaign Zero 101: Learning the bread-and-butter basics of Campaign Zero’s policy and advocacy model & flagship campaigns;
  2. Developing Campaigns 201: Supporting one or more of CZ’s campaigns currently under development.
  3. Targeted Programming 301: Engaging in differentiated programming based upon individualized interests and role-specific competencies, including trainings with data backend platforms such as: Snowflake (using SQL), Azure (using Python), and Airtable (using Python).

What Will You Get Out of This Experience?

  • Work with staff and fellows, under the direction of a staff member, to determine scope, sequencing, timeline, division of labor, action items, deliverables, weekly priorities, and other strategic planning activities for assigned campaigns;
  • Actively participate in all fellowship activities including, but not limited to, lunch-and-learns, social activities, criminal justice 101s, campaign introductory sessions;
  • Develop individualized fellowship goals with your summer manager to hone desired skills and experience;
  • Build and maintain pipelines to ingest, transform, and normalize data sources to power public campaign websites and internal data analytics;
  • Collaborate with campaign managers and/or other summer fellows to automate data ingestion and integration;
  • Cleaning and normalizing campaign data;
  • Perform one-off, “rapid-response” data analyses;
  • Create dashboards and support data visualization for campaign teams;
  • Conduct quality assurance and improvement, normalization and validation of CZ campaigns data to ensure accuracy and precision of campaign aims;
  • Write and maintain detailed and accessible documentation of methods used, data provenance, data structure changes, and procedures for replication;
  • Engage in trainings for technological platforms such as Airtable, Azure, and Snowflake;
  • Be paired with a personally selected mentor;
  • Work within a feedback-rick organization, giving and receiving actionable feedback during 1:1s and group meetings to other fellows, CZ staff, and share self-reflections through surveys and independent written tasks;
  • Participate in externally-led fellow-only DEI sessions;
  • Refine facilitation and storytelling skills by leading presentations and icebreakers.

Requirements

  • A demonstrated commitment and interest in social justice, preferably with a focus on ending police violence and achieving a world beyond policing.
  • Be a strong and effective communicator;
  • Adaptability and agility to changing priorities and directions;
  • Exceptional time management skills;
  • Programming proficiency (Python and SQL);
  • Experience with data analysis and visualization;
  • Research methods experience
