Analyst-Evaluator

Focus for Democracy | Remote | Permanent

Position Summary

Summary

This position will enable the Analyst-Evaluator to have a significant impact on the allocation of millions of dollars in funding for both non-partisan work to strengthen democracy and programs designed to affect election outcomes. Focus for Democracy seeks a skilled analyst to evaluate election-related tactics and programs for possible funding by a network of donors, as well as to suggest new tactical approaches to pilot or test. Requires advanced understanding of statistics and experimental design, and other qualifications.

Full Description

Focus for Democracy (F4D) seeks a skilled evaluator to analyze election-related tactics and programs for possible funding by a network of donors, as well as to suggest new tactical approaches to pilot or test.

F4D is a small, lean organization that has built a large network of donors committed to strengthening democracy. After deeply evaluating programs, it recommends for funding those that are most cost-effective and likely otherwise to be underfunded. In the last election cycle, the network and those introduced to the selected organizations by its principals together gave millions of dollars to recommended organizations. Its charitable arm recommends non-partisan organizations. Its partisan arm recommends organizations working to win elections.

This position will entail using expertise, experience and judgment in evaluating the methodology and treatment effects found in randomized controlled trials and other experiments, as well as developing a familiarity with hundreds of previous experiments and pilot projects. It may also include recommending experimental designs, or evaluating programs that do not lend themselves to experimental analysis.

Required qualifications:

  • Advanced understanding of statistics and experimental design as evidenced by a relevant degree in an appropriate field of study or a combination of work experience and intellectual instruction
  • Experience with power calculations and impact analyses through randomized controlled trials or regression discontinuity analyses, or similar approaches
  • Interest in elections
  • Ability to synthesize and simplify results and recommendations for lay audiences
  • Strong interpersonal and written communications skills
  • Experience in electoral or voter participation campaigns and familiarity with election tactics

Additional desirable qualifications:

  • Commitment to remain in this position through the 2024 elections
  • Familiarity with social media and digital marketing, and media landscape
  • Familiarity with current research on effectiveness of election tactics
  • A track record of creativity in analyzing or solving problems or developing new approaches

Location: Focus for Democracy does not maintain an office, and work may be done remotely from anywhere. The team of six (seven when this position is filled) is in ongoing contact through video calls.

Compensation: $80,000 to $120,000 depending on experience. As a professional position requiring the consistent application of advanced learning, judgment and discretion, this position is exempt from overtime pay requirements.

Benefits: health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, paid time off
