Data Scientist/Senior Data Analyst

Position Summary

The Texas Democratic Party has a reputation among state parties for being a leader in political data. We are looking for someone who is passionate about electing Democrats to help stakeholders utilize data effectively in order to maintain that reputation of excellence. 

This person will have a role in designing, building and maintaining all our data products, which include a partisanship model, reporting dashboards, and a number of other analytic tools. They will be responsible for working directly with campaigns, other departments, county parties, and allied organizations to promote the adoption of these products. 

The ideal applicant will have experience with creating actionable analytic products . While previous political data experience is preferred, it is not required. No degree is required to be considered for this role. However, applicants should demonstrate how their past experiences have prepared them for this position.

This is an excellent role for an experienced data scientist or senior data analyst without a substantial background in politics to break into this field. This position will report to the Data Director, and will be a member of the Data team. However, they will work in close collaboration with the Political Department and other stakeholders across the organization. 

This is not a cycle position: we’re looking for someone to join the team long term. Applicants who can commit to working through the 2024 election cycle will be prioritized. 

Core Responsibilities: 

  • Write SQL to analyze data and build reports and dashboards in Data Studio
  • Write and maintain Python-based data pipelines
  • Design and execute projects for relevant ad hoc analytical requests directed to the TDP Data Team
  • Communicate findings to internal and external stakeholders

 

Additional Responsibilities: 

  • Provide data support to other internal teams
  • Recommend and build new data products to support goals of the Texas Democratic Party

 

Required Skills: 

  • Comfort writing SQL and Python on a daily basis.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, and experience explaining technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience with data visualization and/or building analytics dashboards (Google Data Studio experience is a plus but proficiency in other relevant tools, like Tableau, fulfill this requirement)
  • Experience with GIS or geographic data analysis

 

Preferred Experience: 

  • Political or electoral experience, including having volunteered with campaigns
  • Familiarity with VAN, Hustle, ThruText, Reach, OutVote, or other progressive voter contact tools
  • Data engineering experience, such as working with Airflow.
