Data Validation Fellow

Position Summary

Logistics

We are currently accepting applications for the Fall Data Validation Fellow position. The position is paid at $20/hr, full-time and fully remote. We anticipate this being a 12–16 week full-time position, to start early Sept. and run through Dec. 2021.

Responsibilities 

The Data Validation Fellowship provides the opportunity to do a deep dive into redistricting and contribute to our data validation and processing efforts. We welcome applicants who have academic backgrounds or who are self taught – we have hired both in the past. As a Data Fellow, responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Writing and reviewing QA scripts*
  • Data munging
  • Ad hoc research (quantitative or qualitative)
  • Figuring out how to explain redistricting concepts in a way that is visual and easy to understand
  • Completing redistricting mapping exercises on a variety of mapping platforms

 

*The Data Validation Fellow will support our partner data validation project. The RDH is working to write and run QA scripts to check the work of our partner data organizations. This project involves recreating code, and problem solving when errors are encountered. This position will require a strong programming background.

Position requirements

  • Computer programming skills (Python preferable)
  • Experience with functions such as merge, overlay, concatenate and pivot tables
  • Data analysis skills
  • Time management skills
  • Self-direction
  • Resourcefulness – important when contacting states regarding raw data
  • Prior experience explaining technical subjects (ex. teaching, tutoring, etc) strongly preferred
  • Prior experience with GIS a plus
