Role Objectives

The Inclusive Technical Director will work with internal project managers, digital strategists, designers, and other developers on the services teams to develop web-based solutions to find the right technical solution for our clients that is centered in accessible and inclusive digital environments. Our Inclusive Technical Director will be a friendly, collaborative creator with a team-driven mentality who can guide technical and non-technical team members. This role will be both IT/technical and people-driven.

Salary for this role is $100k – $120k

The Inclusive Technical Director works with clients to identify the best tech architecture but also has deep understanding and can build custom solutions using third-party APIs and other tools and platforms. This person will work with members of the Firefly team to create and maintain processes and resources, such as documentation or code repositories, that help to establish consistency and efficiencies in Firefly’s IT and development processes.

This role’s priorities include:

  • Deliver exceptional service to clients through appropriate solutions research, communication, training, and documentation. Help identify client’s tech strategy for their web dev project including redesign or other projects. Consult with upper management at nonprofits (clients) to help with change management and adoption of solutions that our team will deliver.
  • Develop and maintain custom WCAG 2.1 AA compliant WordPress themes and proactively maintain a knowledge of WCAG web development, WordPress and API best practices.
  • Create tech specs and business requirements –  gathering, understanding and mapping out data schemas and other dataflow for clients.
  • Creation of accessibility standards for WordPress offerings, and implementation of digital accessibility to projects. Own the establishment and maintenance of Firefly’s coding standards and development processes.
  • Proactively develop programs, maintain, and share knowledge of technical best practices related to WordPress and other nonprofit online marketing tools
  • Assist in the sales process by developing the estimates, attending discovery & pitch calls, and reviewing proposals.
  • Act as Technical Lead for a variety of projects, including development and research of new products and services.
  • Carry out appropriate testing (coordinate Accessibility testing), and QA to deliver high-quality products to clients
  • Provide guidance in finding and developing new technologies and methods to advance Firefly’s technical offerings. Help create new products for the market.
  • Contribute to the greater community &  continued efforts to raise Firefly’s reputation and thought leadership as an accessibility focused digital agency. Join panels and discussion forums to help spread our mission and attract new sales.
  • Provide support, coaching, and mentorship to other Firefly developers and contractors, particularly as it related to best practices in web development and problem-solving.
  • Assist in the onboarding of in-house developers and subcontractors by carrying out quality assurance and providing timely feedback throughout the lifecycle of a task or project.

Additionally the Inclusive Technical Director will lead, manage, and hold their team accountable for results (LMA). This person models expected behavior and clearly communicates team goals, expectations, and processes to their team. A Director provides support in hiring and onboarding new team members and keeps management apprised of team performance. The Technical Director provides feedback regularly with the aim of improving performance and providing high-quality customer service. A Director’s role is to support, encourage, and champion other staff and services across the organization. This is regardless of staff seniority, functional area, or technical expertise. You will be accountable for both growing and pruning the technical team and handling any departmental conflicts.

Role Competencies and Requirements

Technical tools and skills needs:

  • WCAG/IAACP understanding and certifications of any variety (Certifications/trainings from the IAAP or other accessibility-centric institutions)
  • Eight or more years of experience in frontend coding using semantic and well-formed HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
  • Five or more years of experience in developing and maintaining custom WordPress plugins using object-oriented PHP
  • Five or more years of experience building or assisting with the maintenance of well-organized, custom WordPress themes that rely heavily on advanced custom fields, custom post types, and well-organized theme functions
  • Experience working with third-party APIs, including Salesforce
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of JavaScript
  • Experience using Sass/SCSS, Gulp, and Git in a team environment

  • A foundational understanding of Adobe suite items, Figma/FigJam and inclusive design principles
  • Bonus if skilled in Hubspot, MailChimp, Salsa Labs, Blackbaud nonprofit software, Engaging Networks, Pardot, Classy, and other fundraising products
  • IT experience and system troubleshooting experience (with patience)

Supervisory Responsibility

This position supervises other Web Developers and Solutions staff on the Technical Team. Must be able to maintain leadership and direction while also contributing as a developer.
