Salary Range up to $220,000 plus substantially above-market benefits
The Independent Pilots Association (IPA) is the collective bargaining unit representing the
more than 3400 professional pilots who fly in service of United Parcel Service (UPS), the
world’s largest transportation company. The IPA is headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky.
The Principal Economic and Data Analyst is responsible for research and analysis on
economic, financial, and statistical issues related to (a) the value/cost of major terms in the
IPA-UPS collective bargaining agreement (CBA); (b) the demographics of the IPA pilot
group; (c) U.S. airline pilot contracts; (d) IPA-UPS contract negotiations; (e) support for work
performed by IPA Negotiating and Scheduling committees; and (f) UPS/industry financial
performance. The Economic and Data Analyst is supported by IPA data analyst(s) and
other related staff and reports to the IPA President.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develops and maintains analyses of the value/cost of major terms in the IPA-UPS CBA,
as well as how the value/cost of the CBA may be affected by changes in UPS’s
operating strategy, strategies of UPS’s competition, and overall economic trends - Assists in the development of reports to the Executive Board and/or the IPA
membership related to IPA pilot scheduling bid packages, pilot demographics, pilot
staffing growth and attrition, and other pilot scheduling/UPS operations issues as
requested - Develop models to value proposed crewmember scheduling/work rule changes
- Maintains an up-to-date library of pilot contracts at U.S. cargo and passenger airlines
- Undertakes research and analysis of IPA and other U.S. pilot contract provisions and
bargaining history as requested by the Executive Board or General Counsel - In coordination with the Executive Board and General Counsel, develops a comparison
of key U.S. pilot contract provisions on an annual basis - Assists the Executive Board and General Counsel by undertaking valuations of IPA and
UPS negotiations proposals, developing analyses and comparisons to support IPA
proposals, and participating in the development of IPA proposals - Maintains an up-to-date library of UPS SEC filings, quarterly earnings releases, earnings
call transcripts, Wall Street analyst reports, and other reports, articles and/or statements
from UPS or other sources regarding UPS’s financial condition and outlook - Develop quarterly summaries of UPS’s financial results for the Executive Board
- Liaisons with staff economic analysts and/or economic analysis committees at other
U.S. pilot unions, industry consultants and analysts to gather and exchange documents
and information to effectively perform these duties and responsibilities - Form hypotheses regarding in-scope matters and anticipate and proactively evaluate
questions. - Performs other duties as assigned by the IPA President and General Counsel
Minimum Qualifications/Experience/Skills:
A bachelor’s degree in economics, finance, business, data analysis, statistics, or other
related field. A minimum of five years of related experience. Effective leadership skills with
the ability to organize and prioritize multiple projects. Should possess curiosity and ability to
think strategically. Excellent interpersonal skills are required. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
and Access. Airline industry experience and programming skills not necessary but
preferred.
