Science Based Targets initiative | Remote | Short-term

Position Summary

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a global body enabling businesses to set ambitious emissions reductions targets in line with the latest climate science. It is focused on accelerating companies across the world to halve emissions before 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions before 2050.

The initiative is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and one of the We Mean Business Coalition commitments. The SBTi defines and promotes best practice in science-based target setting, offers resources and guidance to reduce barriers to adoption, and independently assesses and approves companies’ targets. For more information please visit www.sciencebasedtargets.org.

Research fellows are an integral part of the SBTi Research Team, which leads original and collaborative research that strengthens the SBTi’s methods and guidance. Our research aims to improve the coverage and effectiveness of science-based target-setting approaches through academic engagement, diligent testing/analysis, and multi-stakeholder feedback. Fellows conduct qualitative and quantitative research, under supervision by SBTi staff, to produce tailored research on ambitious corporate action on climate.

You will be assigned to a project based primarily on the needs of the SBTi, as well as consideration of your interests and previous experience. Potential research topics may include: summaries of emerging fields such as greenhouse gas accounting methods, carbon dioxide removal and offsets, equity-focused emissions allocation approaches, market- and location-based instruments for reducing emissions from power generation, and sector-specific decarbonization strategies for industry, transportation, power utilities, and others. This position is an exciting opportunity for someone looking to develop a career in environmental stewardship who is interested in using science to drive action in line with the 1.5C goal of the Paris Agreement.
