Position Summary

Overview: The Data Manager is responsible for executing projects that help our movement utilize data to drive organizing. This includes 1) using data transformation tools to develop the tables and data structures that our programs need, 2) building reports and dashboards that will be used by staff and members across the movement, and 3) working directly with program leads to plan and implement data collection.

Responsibilities

Programmatic support – 15%

  • Work closely with team leads to develop data plans for their programs

  • Educate and coach staff and members on the data resources that we have available and how data can support their work

  • Experiment with new tools and technologies to determine what can support our organizing

  • Support staff and members with ad hoc data requests

Analytics engineering – 40%

  • Use transformation tools like Python, dbt and Hex to maintain a well-tested analytical layer

  • Implement data quality checks and data cleansing techniques to ensure data accuracy and consistency

  • Optimize data pipelines for performance and scalability to handle large volumes of data

Movement reporting – 30%

  • Deliver reporting to staff and members through memos, one-time and automated reports, and dashboards

  • Design new systems to make it easy for staff to have access to the data they need to support their work

Database maintenance and documentation – 15%

  • Do weekly uploads of data into EveryAction from various sources

  • Innovate and implement data hygiene solutions (e.g. to eliminate duplicates)

  • Document workflows and guides in the Data Team Library

During times when Sunrise is focused on electoral work, this position may shift to approximately 50% of work time being focused on electoral data. This may include:

  • Using tools like dbt to create pipelines to process and analyze data from our electoral platforms

  • Set up targeting that matches Sunrise’s electoral and strategy goals

  • Push lists to voter contact tools (phonebanking, textbanking, & canvassing) and ensure results are captured

 

Qualifications 

Must have

  • At least 2 years or equivalent working in a data analytics, data science, data engineering, software engineering or equivalent role. Since so many coding and technical skills are transferable, if you have any relevant experience, we encourage you to apply! We are looking for someone who has the baseline experience to quickly tackle new coding languages or tools

  • Intermediate or above knowledge of SQL

  • Intermediate or above knowledge of Python

  • Experience building pipelines to extract, manipulate and analyze data

  • Advanced knowledge of Google Sheets or Excel

  • Ability to quickly learn how to use new data tools and platforms

  • Ability to train and coach staff and volunteers on our digital tools and processes

  • Ability to work with data to set goals and metrics to drive strategy

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and ability to explain technical concepts to diverse audiences, specifically racially, ethnically, educationally and socioeconomically diverse communities

  • High level of self-organization; ability to be a part of multiple projects and teams, and work on shifting campaign and program timelines and deadlines

  • Commitment to the vision of the Green New Deal and electing progressive candidates

  • Commitment to growth, learning and both giving and receiving feedback

  • An understanding of the concepts of institutional and structural racism and bias and their impact on low-income and communities of color and how this might relate to our data collection and analysis processes

  • Ability to both take initiative/be self-directed, and ask for help when necessary

 

Nice to have 

  • Experience volunteering or working in movement, organizing, or political spaces similar to Sunrise

  • Experience in a leadership role in a Sunrise Movement hub

  • Experience working with EveryAction or NGP VAN

  • Intermediate or above knowledge of Javascript

  • Experience working with dbt, BigQuery

  • Experience working with Hex or a similar data visualization tool

  • Experience working with Airtable

  • Experience with the backend of voter contact distributed tools/platforms (text and phone bank tools, VAN, Mobilize, Ballot Ready)

  • Experience using the voter file to build universes and set up voter outreach with electoral organizing staff

  • Experience using surveys to evaluate program success and collect feedback
