Position Summary

OpenSecrets, Executive Director, Washington, DC

ABOUT OPENSECRETS
Nonpartisan, independent and nonprofit, OpenSecrets is the nation’s premier research group tracking money in U.S. politics and its effect on elections and public policy. Our mission is to track the flow of money in American politics and provide the data and analysis to strengthen democracy. Our vision is for Americans to use this knowledge to create more vibrant, representative and accountable politics and government.

OpenSecrets manages the nation’s premier dataset of federal and state political campaign spending, serving journalists, policymakers, advocates, academics, and the general public with the tools needed to ensure transparency and accountability in elections. OpenSecrets has become an indispensable part of U.S. democracy infrastructure not only through its own original analyses and reporting, but for the data that enables a broad range of others.

More than 7 million people visit the OpenSecrets.org website each year. In 2021, OpenSecrets had more than 33,000 media and research citations; helped more than 5,500 academics from more than 800 institutions of higher learning; and collaborated with hundreds of partner organizations. The organization’s two predecessors have won awards from the MacArthur Foundation, the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, and the Sigma Delta Chi Award for Public Service in Online Journalism from the Society of Professional Journalists, among others.

OpenSecrets formed in 2021 as the merger of the nation’s two leading campaign finance data and transparency organizations — the National Institute for Money in Politics and the Center for Responsive Politics. The union resulted in a unique, data-driven organization that harnesses federal and state data about money and influence in politics, and is attended by a staff of policy experts, journalists, and social and data science professionals. The staff’s work earned the 2022 David C. Rothman Award for Protecting American Democracy.
