Passaic Public Schools
Passaic Public Schools’ mission is to prepare students for college and earn high paying jobs. Our focus is for students to graduate with 15 college credits and/or a career certification. We are a “majority minority” district and our graduation rate has suffered greatly due to COVID. Based on our current analysis, we anticipate a dip in the near future, as well.
Currently, the district is struggling to maintain high levels of family and parental engagement, and hope to foster a more engaged parent body. They seek to have parent-facing data, as opposed to solely leadership- and practitioner-facing data, in conjunction with other strategies to increase meaningful engagement and ultimately increase metrics such as student attendance, student performance, and graduation.
Passaic Public Schools seeks to address one or more of several challenges, including increasing meaningful parental engagement to improve student attendance, performance, and overall outcomes. Ultimately, they hope to answer questions such as: Why aren’t parents engaging? What are the factors behind low engagement? How can we mitigate these factors to increase engagement to bolster student outcomes? Some outcomes related to family and parent engagement they hope to see include and uptick in parent portal usage; enrollment in parent workshops; increased enrollment in academies; increased student attendance; and an increase in the number of college applications.
The fellow will be placed on the Data Team, a team of six in the Technology department, reporting directly to an alum of the Fellowship. Some key responsibilities include leading the implementation of a parent survey and other data collection strategies and collaborating with key stakeholders such as Parent Engagement Liaisons and school and district leaders.
Additional tasks may include:
  • Work closely with district leadership to provide both data Knowledge of Excel and/or Google Sheets
  • Develop ETL pipelines to ingest data from various sources such as student information systems, learning management systems, and assessment platforms.
  • Project and stakeholder management, including development and maintenance of documentation of data systems and processes.
  • Analyze student performance data to identify trends, patterns, and areas for improvement.
  • Collaborate with district leaders and school principals to develop performance metrics and targets.
  • Develop dashboards and visualizations to communicate key performance indicators to district leaders and school principals.

  • at least four years of relevant work experience by summer 2023 (waived for those with a PhD)
  • a demonstrated passion for education reform
  • a track record of collaboration, humility, and ability to guide change
  • an entrepreneurial and innovative spirit
  • flexibility, adaptability, and persistence
  • ability to communicate complex information to various audiences
  • experience with SQL and/or Tableau a plus, or interest in learning
  • stakeholder management and relationship-building experience
  • some qualitative data experience a plus (surveys, focus groups)
We are unable to provide visa sponsorship
Benefits of the SDP Fellowship
  • Two-years of full-time employment with annual salary + benefits (with opportunity for continued employment)
  • Mission-driven analytic work, tackling high-impact challenges
  • Network of talented lifelong colleagues
  • Ongoing professional development
  • In-person and virtual workshops, learning modules, and conferences – travel + lodging included
  • Network-wide slack channel
  • Word class mentorship from faculty and alumni
  • Global alumni network
  • Pathways to leadership

Following each application deadline, we will invite successful candidates to move through the selection process. This process includes a technical analytic assignment, a virtual screening interview, and a virtual interview day. Candidates who are selected from the virtual interview day will interview remotely or on-site at an SDP partner organization. After receiving and accepting an offer from a placement, fellows are welcomed to the fellowship.
