Position Summary
Data and Research Consultancy: DATA2GO.NYC
Measure of America (MOA) is seeking a consultant with background in data analysis, interest in quantitative social science research, and experience with statistical programming language(s) to assist in procuring, cleaning, and analyzing data from diverse data sources as part of a revamp effort for their New York City focused data tool, DATA2GO.NYC.
Background
Measure of America is an initiative of the Social Science Research Council (SSRC), an independent, not-for-profit research organization based in Brooklyn, NY. DATA2GO.NYC is a free, easy-to-use online mapping and data tool created by Measure of America. When it was launched in 2015, it brought together for the first time federal, state, and city data on a broad range of issues critical to the well-being of all New Yorkers. A major revamp of the data tool is underway.
Objective
Measure of America (MOA) is seeking a consultant that can make a time commitment in the range of 15 to 25 hours a week for at least 4 weeks starting in March, with an initial set of days spent in-person (MOA offices are in Brooklyn Heights, NY) to orient the consultant to the project at the start of the engagement.
The consultant will engage with a variety of variables already identified by the Measure of America team, including datasets from the US Census Bureau, IPUMS, the CDC, the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, other City agencies , and more. The work will consist of taking the data and processing it into a standardized format used by the backend of DATA2GO.NYC, checking the data, identifying trends and outliers in the data, and performing correlation and other relationship analysis. This consultancy can potentially be extended to include further analysis and investigation of meaningful patterns in the data, including surfacing
interesting findings in the data to feature on the Measure of America webpage and to shop around to
journalists, after the data pulling and checking process is complete.
