Company Description

About The Impact Project

Now more than ever, the states have a critical role to play in driving our country forward. The Impact Project does this by: 1) winning progressive economic and democracy policies, and 2) shaping the issue and political environment so these states become more progressive over time.

TIP is 100% focused at the state level, driving 365 days a year to shape the politics and win policies. Our work is currently focused in AZ, CO, GA, ME, MD, MI, MN, NV, NM, NC, PA, VA, and WI. We prioritize economic and democracy issues given their ability to change the rules of the game and improve the quality of life for working- and middle-class families. We are a campaign-style entity, we move quickly based on intel in the ground, and iterate strategy and campaigns as needed.

Our Culture

Our culture is fast-paced and we push for results. We love data, experimentation, and learning from both successes and failures (instead of fearing them). We seek team members who are creative, communicative self-starters who enjoy collaboration. We strive to ensure all roles on our team are manageable and sustainable, and invest in efforts to advance equity and belonging.

The core values that show up in our work:

  • Agile – We move quickly and easily. We adapt.
  • Bold – We take risks. We are fearless in the face of big challenges.
  • Curious – We thirst for data and question assumptions.
  • Creative Disruptors – We stretch beyond the norm and innovate. We bring new ideas, new partners, and new strategies.
  • Dig Deep – We aren’t looking for surface wins, but fundamental shifts in power.

Job Description

Summary of Position

The Impact Project (TIP) is looking for a Deputy Director of Data and Analytics to be a key part of our work on public issue advocacy and education campaigns and our voter engagement efforts. The Deputy Director of Data & Analytics ensures that data integrity and best practices are at the forefront of audience development and targeting across our partner programs. The position works with staff and partners to identify target audiences–leveraging a wide array of tools like voter file modeling. The role will offer recommendations from experimental findings from our peer groups including meta-analysis of programs from Analyst Institute in helping shape strategy with our state teams and partners.

The Deputy Director of Data and Analytics reports to the Director of Engagement. The position is full time and considered exempt for overtime purposes.

What You’ll Do

Internal Data Management

  • Manage and oversee large datasets, ensuring data integrity and best practices are at the forefront of audience development and targeting in consultation with State Teams and the Director of Engagement.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and implement complex data workflows, leveraging tools like SQL, Google Looker Studio, and BigQuery.
  • Contribute to the development of data-related policies, procedures, and best practices within the organization.
  • Lead our engagement with The Movement Cooperative and other data toolset partnerships, maximizing the tools available and  cooperatively designing data projects. Navigate data sets in VAN, MyTargetSmart, Civis platform, Periscope, excel, and a statistics package of your choice.
  • Ensure grantees are taking full advantage of the suite of discounted TMC tools (texting, relational organizing, etc).

Program Support  & Analysis

  • Provide guidance on and fulfill requests for creating universes for public issue education, advocacy, narrative and electoral campaign programs, ensuring a dedicated focus on our target audiences and tracking their movement over time.
  • Work with the Director of Engagement and Director of Partnerships and Impact to develop insightful reports and visualizations for team analytics and assessing the grantees’ programmatic impact.
  • Help manage consultants charged with leading organization’s program evaluation efforts, including co-designing evaluation frameworks, establishing metrics, and conducting comprehensive data analyses.
  • Train new staff on our data tools and results of analytics programs to support their work.

Offer Data Driven Insights & Best Practices

  • Stay updated with the latest advancements in data analytics, evaluation methodologies, models and impact assessment techniques, and apply them to improve our data capabilities and reporting practices.
  • Stay apprised of the latest experiment results and guidance from similar organizations working in the progressive space, like the Analyst Institute, bringing back the most salient best practices to apply to our work and share with the team.
  • Provide guidance and support to team members in data analysis techniques, ensuring the highest standards of data quality and analysis.
  • Package lessons learned from peers in this space on data analytics best practices and how they can be applied to ongoing programs to share with staff and grantees.
  • Proactively bring solutions to challenges to the forefront on major bodies of work including audience targeting approaches and audience visualizations for program planning insights.

Qualifications

Who You Are

The ideal candidate is someone who has worked on campaigns, can manage and move data across multiple entities, and find the lessons in the numbers. The position requires a keen analytical mind, creative thinking, and topnotch organizational skills. Must be able to communicate with practitioners in the field and explain issues and solutions to a nontechnical audience.

  • Strategic critical thinker: You quickly grasp the subtleties of issue advocacy and electoral work and can see how it relates to and advances TIP’s theory of change. You think your way around obstacles and come up with crafty and clever ways to proactively address them. You think three steps ahead, course correct, develop bold issue platforms, and see and seize opportunities. You bring a healthy skepticism to conventional campaign wisdom (“the way it’s always been done”), do your research, and innovate to identify and deploy the highest-impact practices.
  • Effective Ambassador: Your excellent presentation and interpersonal skills help you quickly become a trusted advisor to both internal and external players. Your natural curiosity about the way things work – or could work – helps you engage bright minds in answering challenging questions.
  • Strong Project Manager: You set ambitious goals, guide strategic work plans, juggle multiple projects simultaneously, and meet tight deadlines. You push team members outside of their comfort zones, and also exercise diplomacy and flexibility when dealing with sensitive situations to develop cohesive solutions and negotiate successful outcomes.
  • Flexible & Solutions-Oriented: You thrive in a startup environment where the path forward isn’t always clear and the processes are a work in process. You adapt quickly to seize opportunities, and advance solutions to challenges and roadblocks.
  • Race, Equity, Inclusion, & Belonging: You recognize the ways that race, ethnicity, gender, ability, sexual orientation, class, and other identities intersect with the work. You are comfortable talking about identity and understand the historical context for racial equity and its present-day implications. You can identify decisions, policies, or practices that may have disparate impacts based on identity and are motivated to make changes in systems and practices to operationalize equity. You are self-aware about how your identities and positional power influences situations and are able to hear, reflect, act on and learn from feedback tied to identity and equity.
